While the acid rain warning for Istanbul caused uneasiness in many people, the issue of what can be done to protect from acid rains came to the forefront. Specialists warned the citizens saying, “Breathing air can be dangerous due to increased chemical load.” Saying that air mixed with chemicals is especially important for lung diseases, Yeditepe University Hospitals Chest Diseases Specialist Lecturer Dr. Seha Akduman said that it may be useful to take some precautions.
Pointing out that breathing air mixed with chemical substances can cause negative changes in all systems, especially in the lungs, Lecturer Dr. Seha Akduman said, “Those with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD and lung cancer, pregnant women and children are at higher risk due to their weak immune systems. People in this group should be especially careful.”
Reminding that in such cases, various complaints may arise depending on the concentration of chemicals and the amount of exposure, Chest Diseases Specialist Lecturer Dr. Seha Akduman gave the following information:
“It can cause itching in the eyes, coughing due to the bronchial involvement, shortness of breath, and exacerbations in chronic lung patients. In order to minimize the negative effects of air mixed with chemicals and rain, it will be beneficial to limit the time spent outdoors and to use an umbrella.”
