Head of Dermatology Department of Yeditepe University Hospitals Prof. Dr. Oktay Taşkapan stated that methods such as rubbing with garlic, which are widely used among the people in hair loss, damage the skin and said, "Wrong applications to the area with hair loss can completely prevent hair growth. It is useful for those with hair loss to consult a dermatologist.”
What Causes Hair Loss?
Many genetic, hormonal, and familial factors play a role in hair loss. From time to time, especially in women, it may be necessary to patch up hormone analyses when investigating the cause of hair loss. Some dermatological diseases that occur on the scalp, some drugs that are being used can cause hair loss. Another cause of hair loss is psychological factors. Psychological factors can cause a common hair loss, and sometimes there is a sudden loss of a certain part of the hair (or beard) due to intense sadness or mental trauma. In such cases, garlic is applied to that area among the people, or some irritating processes are applied. Such methods do not provide any benefit, but on the contrary, they often damage the skin.
Are There Any Types of Hair Loss?
There are roughly two types of hair loss. One is a common thinning of the scalp, and the other is regional shedding. Spills, mental traumas, severe febrile illnesses, iron deficiency anemia and sparsity due to thyroid diseases, which usually begin a few months after birth and regress after a few months, are in the first group. There is also "male pattern hair loss" (androgenic alopecia or pattern alopecia). Here, the hair becomes especially thin on the front and in the hill area.
Also, as we mentioned above, there may be regional shedding on the scalp or in the beard area or other body hair in men. Also, hair is shed in a number of skin diseases.
