According to Yeditepe University Hospitals Dermatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Oktay Taşkapan, who says that itching, which is very common, can be a symptom of many diseases, "In addition to skin diseases, itching can be a symptom of many diseases ranging from anemia to parasites. Therefore, it is necessary to take the long-lasting itching seriously.”
Experts emphasize the importance of paying attention to the common itching seen today, stating that these symptoms can often indicate other underlying diseases. Yeditepe University Hospitals Dermatology specialist Prof. Dr. Oktay Taşkapan emphasized the importance of considering frequent itching as a symptom, stating that itching can be a sign of many diseases ranging from eczema to lice, drug reactions to scabies, and fungal infections. He also mentioned that this symptom, which can cause sleeplessness and depression and even lead to suicide, can accompany many internal diseases as well.
Stating that itching is sometimes associated with quite complex problems, Taşkapan said, "Common and unexplained itching can occur during the course of systemic diseases such as intestinal parasites, diabetes, internal organ cancers, gallstones, or viral hepatitis (jaundice), as well as during the course of malignancies (malignant blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma), renal failure, and AIDS, or sometimes as the first symptom of these diseases. One of the most common causes of itching is skin dryness. It is a very common species in elderly patients. Frequent bathing with harsh alkaline soaps and very hot water can further exacerbate this disruption, weaken the protective lipid barrier, and lead to skin dryness and itching. In our country, the common habit of exfoliation and scrubbing also plays an important role in causing dryness and itching of the skin. Unless proven otherwise, if a patient complains of itching without any visible signs on the skin, this should be considered as a symptom of an underlying disease,"
