It's essential to protect brain health to ensure optimal cognitive and physical functions. Furthermore, Neurology specialist Dr. Yüksel Dede emphasizes the significant importance of this aspect in improving our overall quality of life. "In fact, everything we do to maintain our general health also contributes to preserving brain health," he says.
Our brain health is closely linked to our lifestyle, habits, and daily activities. Therefore, making small changes in our daily life can significantly contribute to maintaining brain health. On the occasion of "World Brain Day," Neurology Specialist Dr. Yüksel Dede from Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital provided recommendations on what we can do to protect our brain health. Dr. Dede emphasized that having a healthy brain is not only essential for smooth cognitive and physical functions but also for enhancing our quality of life. He explained that various factors in our daily life, from nutrition and sleep patterns to exercise habits and stress management skills, are directly related to our brain health.
Uzm. Dr. Dede emphasized that nutrition, one of the fundamental pillars of our health, is also crucial for brain health. He stated that Mediterranean diet, in particular, has been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on brain health. Uzm. Dr. Dede mentioned that consuming fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, balanced intake of whole grains, nuts, and protein sources, as well as including foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds in daily diet, are essential for maintaining brain health.
Regular exercise and leading a physically active life have a positive impact on brain health, as explained by Dr. Dede. "During exercise, blood circulation increases, delivering more oxygen to the brain. At the same time, exercising contributes to reducing stress. Therefore, regardless of your age, incorporate suitable exercise into your life. Whether it's walking, running, pilates, or a different type of exercise, the important thing is to make it a regular habit," he said.
Reminding that the body rejuvenates and rests through sleep, Uzm. Dr. Dede emphasized that quality and sufficient sleep is an essential factor for brain health. "Getting at least 7 hours of sleep per day is necessary for the brain's repair and resting process. To achieve better sleep quality, avoid consuming caffeine in the afternoon, try not to eat heavy meals before sleep, establish a regular sleep routine, and create a dark, quiet, and suitable temperature sleep environment," he said.
Dr. Dede pointed out that along with the things to do for brain health, there are also things not to do, and stress comes at the forefront of these. "It is known that chronic stress negatively affects brain health. To prevent this, using stress management methods such as yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, spending time on hobbies, and being in nature will be beneficial," she said.
Dr. Yüksel Dede emphasized that keeping the brain constantly active and engaging in enjoyable and stress-reducing activities will have positive effects at any age. "To keep the brain sharp, it's important to engage in regular mental activities. Activities like learning a new language, reading books, solving puzzles, playing chess, and acquiring new skills contribute greatly to brain health," said Dr. Dede.
Furthermore, having a social life, socializing, and interacting with different people are important factors for a healthy brain, Dr. Dede noted. He continued, "It's known that engaging in social interactions, spending time with family and friends, has a positive impact on brain health. Therefore, we recommend that individuals of all age groups, but especially older adults, avoid isolation, explore different environments, and engage in activities that keep their brains active.
Only for the preservation of not only brain health but also overall health, it is crucial to stay away from cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, as emphasized by Dr. Dede. He stated, "These substances not only have negative effects on cardiovascular health but also adversely impact achieving quality sleep and cognitive functions of the brain. Therefore, if these habits exist, they should be stopped without delay, without thinking that it's too late."
While being extremely important, head injuries are sometimes overlooked and should also be taken into consideration for brain health, emphasized Dr. Dede, continuing his words as follows: "At this point, especially when engaging in sports that could lead to trauma, taking necessary precautions is important. Using proper and correct equipment and ensuring safety are among the measures that must be taken by individuals of all ages."
Highlighting the close relationship between brain health and overall body health, Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Neurology Specialist Dr. Yüksel Dede emphasized that the state of general health directly affects the brain, whether positively or negatively. Dr. Dede emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, especially for individuals with chronic illnesses. He stated, "Chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol can impact not only cardiovascular health but also brain health. Therefore, it's crucial to manage chronic conditions. Additionally, regular medical check-ups are essential for monitoring overall health and addressing potential issues."
