Yeditepe University Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Yaşar Küçükardalı made important warnings for diabetes patients. Informing that there is an increase in complaints about increased sugar levels in diabetes patients due to the more frequent occurrence of infectious diseases in winter months, Küçükaradalı also emphasized that diabetes may lie under infectious diseases that do recover.
IF YOU OFTEN GET SICK...
Saying that recurrent infections during the winter months may be a sign of underlying diabetes, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Küçükardalı warned that people who often get flu infections and lung infections during the winter months and who have a lengthy recovery period may have undiagnosed diabetes. He said that those who often get sick should take tests for diabetes."It should be remembered that there may also be an underlying insidious infection in the elderly who have increased blood sugar," said Küçükardalı, making the following warning: "Some elderly people may not have a high fever during infection, it may manifest itself with the deterioration of the overall condition."
"It is necessary to distinguish between dry mouth caused by flu medications and dry mouth caused by high blood sugar. Blood sugar should be measured, a sufficient amount of fluid should be received, and flu medications that cause dry mouth should be avoided.
The palpitations that can be caused by flu medications and the ones that can be caused by a dropped blood sugar level should also be distinguished from each other. When blood sugar drops, a change in consciousness also begins to occur. When suspected, it is necessary to get a blood sugar measurement.
- In case of illness, the fact that our body tries to recover from the infection leads to stress in the body. This leads to an increase in certain hormones, thus an increase in blood sugar values, even if you eat very little. For this reason, considering the patients who think their blood sugar value does not increase as they eat a little due to loss of appetite when they get sick, not having their blood sugar measured regularly, and not taking medications regularly are wrong behaviors.
- Measure your blood sugar at different time intervals.
Stating that you should measure your blood sugar at least four times a day in mild diseases, Küçükardalı said, "In more severe cases, it should be measured every three hours. If you have any doubts about what you can do, call your specialist counselor immediately."
