Yeditepe University Hospitals Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren warned against hypertension. Drawing attention to the fact that the most important symptom of the disease is pain starting from the nape of the neck, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren: “In the summer months, some patient groups have high blood pressure and applications to us increase. Fluid intake, vegetable, and fruit-weighted nutrition are important in treatment.”
Hypertension, known as high blood pressure (high blood pressure), is affected by a person's momentary state such as age, gender, race, stress, and joy. Considering the prevalence of hypertension, the doctor pointed out that there is male dominance in western societies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren stated that women have come to the fore in Turkey according to the studies conducted in recent years. Remarking the incidence of hypertension in Turkey is around 30 percent, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özveren: “In Western societies, these values are slightly lower. As blood pressure rises, the rate of hypertension increases. While the rates in our country increase in the 50s, the real increase is in the 70s.”
Pay Attention to These Warnings In Summer
Stating that they detected an increase in blood pressure elevation due to both hot weather and high-altitude effect in summer, Yeditepe University Kozyatağı Hospital Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren: “When it comes to summer months in Turkey, people go to their hometowns and go to high altitudes. During these periods, especially when the altitude is above 1500, we may encounter high blood pressure. In these patient groups, the need for drugs and the doses of drugs may need to be increased. In the summer, some patient groups have high blood pressure and applications to us may increase. However, when we think about Istanbul, we do not see hypertension patients more since people go to holiday resorts in summer. But these cases may be more common in coastal areas.''
Giving advice, especially to people living in coastal areas, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özveren:
“It is very important not to go out on the street between 11.00-16.00 when the sun rays are steep. In addition, these people need to pay attention to fluid intake. The daily need for fluid should be increased from half to one liter. We should also determine the need for this according to the person's weight. Normally, we recommend fluid intake between 2.5-3 liters. We increase the number of electrolytes in the body and salt in patients with a salt restriction against salt loss. We recommend a Mediterranean-type diet for hypertension patients. This is even more important in the summer months. In addition to fluid intake, we recommend a vegetable and fruit-weighted diet. One must stop smoking. Alcohol consumption increases in the summer. Women need to pay more attention to this. Do not exceed 20 grams of alcohol per day. 5-6 grams of salt is sufficient in these patients, but if we consider that salt excretion is higher in summer, they may increase the amount of salt a little more. It is necessary to stay away from fatty foods. Carbohydrates need to be consumed less. We recommend eating fruits and vegetables.”
Do Not Underestimate Headache
Underlining that headache is the most important symptom of high blood pressure, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren: “In addition, dizziness, the feeling of heartbeat more, difficulty in breathing while walking, rapid fatigue, and weakness can be counted among the symptoms. In particular, headaches need to be taken seriously. Headache is one of the causes of high blood pressure. In some hypertension patients, the reason for applying to the doctor is a headache. We can diagnose pain that starts from the nape of the neck, throbbing, does not go away, and lasts for a long time, especially by measuring blood pressure."
Stating that hypertension is associated with other diseases, Yeditepe University Hospital Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Olcay Özveren: “Diabetes, obesity, smoking, age factor, and several endocrine diseases come first. We do not evaluate hypertension patients only with this disease. We subject it to a scale we call cardiovascular risk. The potential complications of hypertension in the coming years can show us the extent of organ damage and the risk of it.”
