The Treatment of Breast Cancer and the Repair Process of the Breast are a Whole

All over the world, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women after skin cancer. who Stating that according to statistics, one out of every eight women in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer in a certain period of her life, Yeditepe University Hospitals Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist emphasized that the breast lost after breast cancer can be recovered with Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery applications.

Informing that breast repairs make an important contribution to the normalization of women's lives after breast loss, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist, also pointed out that there is a suitable breast repair technique for every patient with modern techniques and applications.

The Feeling of Organ Loss is Prevented by Multidisciplinary Study in Treatment

Other methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy are of great importance in increasing the effectiveness and success of surgery, which is the main treatment method, and are an integral part of breast cancer treatment. The type and extent of breast cancer determine the type of treatment to be applied. Stating that breast repair aims to provide the most natural appearance and symmetry, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist said, “It is possible to obtain the closest appearance to reality, thanks to mastectomy surgeries in which the breast skin and nipple are preserved, which can only be performed in some centers today. There are 2 key factors in breast repairs. These are when to perform the repair and which method to use.”

When Should Breast Repair Be Performed?

Informing that there are two options regarding the timing of the repair, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist states that the simultaneous repair is performed at the same time as breast cancer surgery, and says that nowadays, simultaneous repairs are preferred so that patients experience less psychological trauma caused by breast loss due to breast cancer. The second option, late repair, is performed some time after breast cancer surgery. Treatment and repair processes are whole. Expressing that breast reconstruction has become a part of breast cancer treatment today, Prof. Dr. Uğur Anıl Bingöl expressed his views on the subject as follows: “The most important point about breast repair is that the repair does not delay the treatment of breast cancer and does not have a negative effect on the treatment. The main priority is to treat the disease. For this reason, Breast Surgeons, Oncologists, and Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgeons should conduct a multidisciplinary study. It is necessary to decide which type of repair is suitable for the treatment to be applied. After this stage, the patient's detailed evaluation by Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery and the determination of the most appropriate method is the basic condition for a successful breast repair. In a breast cancer operation, either only the cancerous breast tissue is removed or the breast skin and/or the nipple is removed together with the cancerous breast tissue. In the surgical treatment of breast cancer (mastectomy), skin and nipple-sparing surgeries have gained popularity in recent years. Breast repair (reconstruction) in the same session with surgeries in which the nipple and breast skin are preserved is more successful aesthetically and functionally.”

It Is Important to Protect the Patient from Psychological Negativities

Pointing out that multidisciplinary work and coordination are essential for a full, complete, and all-around breast cancer treatment, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist also points out that the goal should be to completely remove cancer from the body and to choose the methods with which we can achieve the best aesthetic result: “For this, it is important to use the breast repair method simultaneously with nipple and breast skin sparing surgery. Thus, the patient both receives breast cancer surgical treatment and stays away from the negative effects of breast loss.” Applying the following rules before breast repair surgery will facilitate the recovery:

• Quitting smoking
• Maintaining your ideal weight
• Being physically active
• Making sure to tell your doctor if you are taking a weight loss medication or herbal supplement
• Staying away from medications and foods that can dilute the blood
