The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said the vaccine could cause heart inflammation in children. When the risks of the virus and the vaccine are compared, Clinical Microbiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Aynur Eren Topkaya said, “Changes in the genetic structure of the coronavirus, that is, variants, are classified into two groups as alarming and watched with interest.”
Yeditepe University Hospitals Medical Microbiology President Prof. Dr. Aynur Eren Topkaya explained: “Worrying variants are variants that have been proven to be easier to transmit and lead to more severe diseases. Those whose reflections in the clinic are not yet very clear, those who are controversial and monitored whether they cause severe illness are also classified as interesting variants. Coronavirus has shown that it has the ability to develop more mutations than expected. While the UK variant refers to the South African variant as the Brazilian variant, the Indian variant is currently on the agenda as the worrying variant. It is the UK variant that is still common in Turkey. Although the number of cases has decreased, we can say that the majority of positive cases are UK variants.”
Stating that the World Health Organization classifies the Delta, that is, India, variant as an alarming variant, Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine Medical Microbiology US President Prof. Dr. Aynur Eren Topkaya said, “The Indian variant, also known as the delta variant, has begun to spread. Studies are currently being conducted on this variant. It is known that there is not yet a virus that can completely evade vaccines, but it will continue to be monitored. The disease picture showed personal differences in those who encountered the virus. There were also personal differences in reactions to vaccines. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the change in the genetic structure of the virus in each society, the spread of new variants that emerge, and the course of the disease. We can speak according to the data emerging in countries such as India and England. According to the data there, it is said to spread more easily and cause more severe disease.”
“Our hope is, of course, in vaccines, as there is not yet a highly effective drug against the virus,” Prof. Dr. Aynur Eren Topkaya said, “Especially in this period, such variants are not the last; as the virus continues, new variants will emerge. That is why vaccination is so important. You should not believe the indigenous unjustified news about vaccines.
Drawing attention to the recent studies, Prof. Dr. Aynur Eren Topkaya stated, “A few days ago, the CDC published a study on how the Biontech vaccine causes heart inflammation in children. Data were collected in countries with a lower vaccination age. However, it should not be forgotten that the virus itself can do this. The virus causes 100 times more heart muscle inflammation.”
Regarding the vaccine, unfortunately, there are many superstitions from almost all segments of society and this situation may adversely affect the vaccination rate. Dr. Topkaya said:
''Some people try to get metal spoons close to their bodies and test whether they have chips placed on their bodies. Of course, there is no such situation. Another thing is that there are people who say that after the vaccination, there is a gland under the armpit and on the neck. In addition, some experience symptoms of the disease. This is very normal because the vaccine is intended to stimulate our immune system. These effects are temporary and do not cause permanent illness. People can take painkillers containing paracetamol and rest. We do not expect long-term side effects from the vaccine. But if you do not vaccinate, unfortunately, we will continue to lose lives.”
