General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Özcan Gökçe said that he does not recommend breast-conserving surgery to treat the multifocal tumor, which is observed simultaneously in different foci in the breast. Prof. Dr. Gökçe said, ”When we find the focus where the cancer is located, it is necessary to remove the entire breast because there is always a possibility of recurrence."
Giving information about multifocal breast cancer, Yeditepe University General Surgery Department Head Prof. Dr. Özcan Gökçe reported its prevalence and listed the precautions that should be taken. Emphasizing that foods containing excessive fat and protein increase the risk of breast cancer, Prof. Dr. Gökçe stated that breast cancer is observed in one out of every eight women in the world.
Indicating that people with a genetic predisposition have a high risk of developing multifocal breast cancer, Prof. Dr. Özcan Gökçe remarked, “Multifocal breast cancer is the simultaneous occurrence of breast cancer at different foci, in areas closer to each other than five centimeters. Women with a genetic predisposition and developing breast cancer under the age of 35 have an increased risk of developing multifocal and multicentric breast cancer. It is no different from other breast cancers; it can manifest itself directly as a mass. It can be found in the form of foci on ultrasound or mammography in women who get their regular checks. Its treatment is possible, especially if multicentric ones are in separate quadrants, it is necessary to remove a large part of the breast tissue.”
Emphasizing that it is necessary to remove the entire breast in the face of the possibility of triggering cancer, Prof. Dr. Özcan Gökçe noted, "Breast-conversing surgery is one of the treatment methods. But it must not be preferred in patients with multifocal and multicentric breast cancer. It can be chosen as a treatment method for other breast cancers. It is essential to remove the entire breast because once breast cancer develops, it is always possible to occur in different foci in the entire breast tissue. Early-stage breast cancers can be treated very well, and the treatment provides protection of about 100 percent. For this reason, it is essential that every woman have regular checks and that if there is breast cancer, it is detected before the stage progresses.”
Reporting that breast cancer is observed in one out of every eight women in the world, Prof. Dr. Özcan Gökçe said, "The occurrence rate of multifocal and multicentric breast cancers among all breast cancers worldwide varies from 4 percent up to 75 percent. Therefore, in every breast cancer, when we find the focus, there is always a possibility that breast cancer can also be present in a different area, and this possibility should come to mind. Genetic research should be conducted among people whose aunt, sister, or mother has uterine or ovarian cancer along with breast cancer. In such patients, the possibility of the presence of multifocal and multicentric breast cancer is high.”
Indicating that nutrition pattern is important, Prof. Dr. Gökçe said, "The risk of breast cancer is higher in western societies that eat foods with excessive fat and protein. For example, in Japanese society, it is less likely to develop breast cancer due to both genetics and nutrition. Breast cancer awareness must increase among women. Every woman should have routine imaging checkups by starting ultrasonography by 20 years of age and mammography between 40 and 50 years of age. In order for breast cancer to be detected early, one should have these screenings.”
