The name ozone is derived from the Greek word "ozein", which means "smell emitter". It is also called "God's breath." Ozone is a high-energy form of 2-atom oxygen consisting of 3 oxygen atoms and is an unstable, pungent, heavier-than-air, irritant gas. It is the strongest oxidizing agent after fluorine and persulfate among the oxidizing agents in nature. Ozone gas, which has very strong disinfectant (not in vivo, but ex vivo), antimicrobial, immune modulator, and oxidative properties, has an "antioxidant effect" by activating the antioxidant enzyme system (glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase), which neutralizes free oxygen radicals. Due to these opposite effects, ozone was likened by Justus von Liebig in 1935 to the Roman God Janus (Roman God with faces facing in opposite directions) by Bocci in the following years. The ozone used in medical treatment is called "Medical Ozone".

What is Medical Ozone?

Medical Ozone is obtained from devices called "Medical Ozone Generators" by exposing a certain current rate and 100 percent pure medical oxygen to high electrical voltage (corona discharge). Because ozone is a reactive molecule, it is used for medical purposes as an oxygen-gas mixture. Ozone concentrations between 1 and 100 mcg/ml consist of 95-99.5 percent oxygen and 5-0.05 percent ozone gas mixture depending on the application.
