“Human MetaPneumoVirus” is not actually a new virus. Flu, which causes respiratory illness during the winter months, is a type of cold virus with similar symptoms to influenza. It is not thought that this virus, which has existed and been monitored since 2001, will cause a global epidemic.
As with other viruses, being in crowded environments, direct contact with a sick person, contact with places that have the virus on them, and not paying attention to hand hygiene are the causes of transmission of the HMPV virus.
HMPV shows the same symptoms as other cold viruses. Cough, runny nose, fever, feeling of fatigue, muscle pain and breathing difficulties are the main symptoms.
There are three groups that are particularly at risk for HMPV. The first is children under the age of 5, the second risk group is people over the age of 60, and the third group is people with weak or suppressed immune systems. It is known that people in these risk groups are more likely to apply to the hospital due to the occurrence of pneumonia, bronchitis and other complications.
The definitive diagnosis of HPMV is made with a molecular test. Since these tests are expensive, they are not performed for routine screening purposes.
There is no known specific treatment for HMPV. In addition to routine cold treatments, secondary or tertiary diseases are treated.
Nowadays, social distance is one of the main infection control methods. It is very important for people to comply with the recommended protection methods, especially in cold months, not to walk around in crowded places without a mask, to prevent contact with sick people, and to pay attention to hand hygiene to protect against the disease.
