Reminding that 1 out of every 8 women is diagnosed with breast cancer, Radiologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi stated that early diagnosis saves lives in breast cancer and imaging methods are very important in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çelebi pointed out that as the advances in imaging technologies increase, the rates of early diagnosis of breast cancer increase.
Reminding that mammography is still accepted as the gold standard in breast cancer screening, Yeditepe University Kozyatağı Hospital Radiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi said that the European Breast Radiology Association, NCCN Guideline, and the Turkish Radiology Association recommended that breast cancer screenings be performed with digital breast tomosynthesis. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çelebi said, “We recommend that digital breast tomosynthesis should be applied in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment follow-up, especially in populations with a high number of young people, such as in our country, and therefore in populations with more dense breast tissue, by stating that its sensitivity to detecting breast cancer has increased and false positivity rates are low.”

“With the Advancement in Breast Imaging Technologies, Early Diagnosis Rates in Breast Cancer Increase”

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), one in five people in the world will get cancer by 2020. Underlining that breast cancer is also one of the most common types of cancer, Radiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi said that the place of screening, early diagnosis and treatment is indisputable in a disease with such a high prevalence rate.
Emphasizing that breast cancer is also one of the common types of cancer and ranks 2nd among the cancer types that cause death, Yeditepe University Radiology Department  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi gave special information to Breast Cancer Awareness and Awareness Month.

"As in the world, female breast cancer is the most common cancer in our country"

Reminding that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer all over the world, Radiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi pointed out that imaging methods are of great importance in the diagnosis and treatment follow-up of this cancer, which is so common. Stating that technological developments are constantly changing in this field as in all fields, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi drew attention to the new recommendations of the European Breast Radiology Association, NCCN Guidelines, and the Turkish Radiology Association in this field.  Reminding that mammography is still accepted as the gold standard in breast cancer screening, Assoc. Prof. Prof. Dr. Çelebi said scans are recommended to be performed with digital breast tomosynthesis. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çelebi: “We recommend that digital breast tomosynthesis be used in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, especially in countries where the young population is denser, as in our country, due to its high sensitivity to detecting breast cancer and low false positivity rates.”

Underlining that the imaging methods used in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, Assoc. Dr. Filiz Çelebi said, “These imaging images enable early diagnosis and treatment to be started early. It also plays an important role in planning the right treatment. ” 
Reminding that breast cancer screening was started at an earlier age in societies with a young population, such as in Turkey, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi continued as follows: “For example, while screening is performed in European countries at the age of 50 and above, this age in our country falls to 40 years of age, unlike many European countries, due to the high number of young people and breast cancers in this age group. Since breast density is higher in the early age group, digital breast tomosynthesis has higher sensitivity for screening and diagnosis purposes. At this point, we emphasize the importance of imaging, especially in this age group. "
Stating that digital breast tomosynthesis technology has a history of approximately 10 years covering different countries, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çelebi explained that digital imaging is at the forefront in many centers in Turkey and that these developments are closely followed in many centers in our country.

Everything is changing, nowadays, with lower radiation doses, and even with some algorithms, artificial images can be created and effective imaging can be done. In addition, artificial intelligence has started to take an important place in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. At the same time, development continues day by day with ‘deep machine learning’, that is, machine learning, computer-aided screening methods, and radiologists experienced in breast imaging.
The world is moving towards person-based imaging right now. This will be achieved through digital systems, artificial intelligence systems and, of course, experienced breast radiologists, which are indispensable. ”

“Ultrasound Should Be Added to Mammography in the Young Population”

Saying that awareness is still not at the desired level in this important problem that concerns one in every 8 women, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi: "Therefore, we recommend that women aged 40 and over in our country have breast screenings with mammography and that ultrasonography is added to these screenings in a young population under the age of 40.''
Underlining that mammograms to be performed without skipping the screening order are vital in terms of preventing the loss of life from breast cancer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Çelebi said that mammography should be done regularly once a year from the age of 40. "Those who have breast cancer in their family should start screening earlier. Especially those who have breast cancer before the age of 40, such as their mother or sister, should start screening 10 years before their relatives are diagnosed. Breast MRI should also be added to the follow-up of these individuals who constitute the special group."
