A study conducted in the United States found a significant result in the relationship between diabetes and breakfast. According to this, the risk of life loss due to cardiovascular diseases increases by 69 percent, and the risk of death due to diabetes doubles in those who prefer to eat dinner instead of breakfast. Endocrinologist says, "When we say healthy nutrition, we can give an example of Turkish breakfast. The type of breakfast that contains olives, olive oil, greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers in our breakfast consists of a combination of nutrients necessary for health.
Yeditepe University Hospitals Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Specialist stated that diabetes has increased dangerously in Turkey and drew attention to the results of the research: “We see that 13.7 percent of the Turkish society has diabetes. This means that one out of every seven people we meet on the street has diabetes. We have the results of a study that investigates the effect of which meal we consume on the risk of death. In this study, the effect of breakfast or dinner preferences on the risk of loss of life was investigated when 4,700 people followed for 10 years.
As a result, when we compare people who eat dinner as a main meal with those who eat breakfast as a main meal, they observe that the risk of death increases by 69 percent in those who have cardiovascular diseases and double the risk of death due to diabetes. Again, when people who participated in this study took a 5 percent calorie from the dinner meal and added it to the morning meal, the risk of loss of life was equalized. In this study, 4,700 people were followed for 10 years. At the end of the first 10-year follow-up period starting between 2003 and 2014, a total of 913 patients lost their lives. Of these, 269 died from diabetes, while 314 died from cardiovascular problems. In terms of risk, it was observed that the risk of life loss due to cardiovascular diseases increased by 69 percent, and the risk of life loss due to diabetes increased by 2 times in people who preferred dinner instead of breakfast."
Stating that he recommended Turkish breakfast, Yeditepe University Hospitals Endocrinology Specialist continued as follows: “When we say healthy nutrition, we can give an example of Turkish breakfast. The type of breakfast that contains olives, olive oil, greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers in our breakfast consists of a combination of nutrients necessary for health. The important thing to note here is that the carbohydrate content is not high. It is necessary not to consume too many foods such as jam and honey, to limit the consumption of bread to 1-2 slices, and to prefer it to the more fibrous types of bread. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to prefer homemade bread here instead of ready-made white bread. It is necessary to take some carbohydrates for breakfast, but while doing this, it is necessary to pay attention to its weight and avoid refined products. If you are eating bread made from white flour, it is an unhealthy diet. Instead, we should prefer bread made from oatmeal, whole wheat, and mixed flour. ”
Adding that breakfast is important and necessary for the repair of cells, Yeditepe University Hospital Endocrinology Specialist concluded: “The biggest mistake is not to have breakfast. Most people start their day without breakfast. During the whole night, our body is busy repairing some of our cells and losing energy. Not eating breakfast while starting the day with that loss of energy actually causes our body's energy to decrease even more. Diabetes prevalence in Turkey, the most recent diabetes research was conducted close to 10 years ago. According to this data, there is a 13.7 percent prevalence of diabetes. This rate is considered to be higher. One out of every seven people we meet on the street is diabetic. When we add the prediabetes cases, which are the precursors of diabetes, to this ratio, it is concluded that 1 out of every 3 people is at risk of diabetes or diabetes. Forty percent of the patients died because of a heart attack or stroke.”
