Emel Tosun (44) living in Istanbul consulted a doctor due to body pains that did not go away. The patient, who could not even sleep, was diagnosed with a parathyroid tumor. When she underwent surgery for treatment, both a parathyroid tumor was not found, and a new tumor was detected in the thyroid gland. The patient experienced a series of shocks!
Emel Tosun, who lives in Istanbul, started to experience widespread body pain last January. Her pain became so severe that over time it also led to insomnia. Tosun went to the hospital to find out the reason for her complaints. The patient, who was found to have high levels of parathyroid hormone in the blood, was operated on with the diagnosis of parathyroid tumor. However, the tumor in the parathyroid gland was not found, and the thyroid gland was removed instead. A tumor was found in the removed thyroid gland. Moreover, there was no tumor in the parathyroid gland. While the tumor in the parathyroid gland continued to stay in her body, the pain of the unfortunate woman who had a thyroid tumor shock continued to increase. After contacting Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Endocrine Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Erhan Ayşan, Tosun's parathyroid tumor was found in the chest cavity and was successfully removed with a successful operation.
Emel Tosun, who was relieved of the pain she had been experiencing for about a year, said, “My incessant joint pain, fever, and sweating wore me out. The uneasiness of not being able to recover despite my surgery also affected me psychologically. I had lymphoma 20 years ago. Even when I was treated for cancer, I did not suffer such pain. I was very worried that cancer had spread to my bone. I was starting to lose hope that I would recover. Thankfully, I reached Dr. Erhan. After examination and tests, he found where my parathyroid tumor was and performed my surgery to remove the tumor. Now my health came back. I am so happy.”
Endocrine Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Erhan Ayşan, who performed the surgery on Emel Tosun, made the following statements: “In our evaluation, we determined that the parathyroid gland was not in its usual place, but was inside the chest cavity. Although this is a rare situation, we made the necessary preparations accordingly and successfully performed the surgery. Moreover, we performed this surgery through the same incision made in the first surgery. We removed the mass in the chest cavity through this incision. Careful evaluation and experience are essential in such cases. In addition, the fact that cancer in the thyroid gland was very small gave the patient an advantage. Thus, there was no need for additional cancer treatment.”
Stating that these patients are generally unlucky, Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Endocrine Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Erhan Ayşan said, “Widespread body pain is experienced when the parathyroid glands are overactive. Unfortunately, these patients are often accused of exaggerating their complaints or even being unrealistic, since the diagnosis is not easy. However, when the parathyroid gland is overactive, it draws calcium from the bones into the blood. When bones lose calcium, they become thinner, and weaker and start to cause pain. In such patients, the diagnosis can be made by looking at blood calcium and parathyroid hormone during the first examination. After this stage, all that remains is to determine which parathyroid gland is ill and to remove it with a correct surgical technique. The second most common symptom after the pain is kidney stones. People with recurrent kidney stones should consult an endocrinologist or an endocrine surgeon. Nail deformations and cataract formation in the eyes, although rare, are other findings.”
