In transplantation process, person that receives the stem cells is defined as “the patient” whereas the person who donates the healty stem cells is defined as “the donor.” Classified according the donor type, there are 3 types of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation:
Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
The type of of transplanta tion in which the patient’s own cells are given to him/her is defined as ‘Autologous Stem Cell Transplant’. It is frequently used in the treatment of some solid tumors.
Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell
Transplantation Allogeneic transplantation is a procedure in which a patient receives healty hematopoietic stem cells form a donor. It is the preferred type of trans plantation mainly for malign and genetic diseases.
Syngeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
This is the type of transplantation performed between monozygotic (one-egg) twins.
