After a long summer vacation, the school bell is almost ringing. The transition to a new order after the summer vacation, when the rules are relaxed, can force parents as well as children. However, it is extremely important to adapt quickly to this new era. Research shows that many points, from sleep patterns to breakfast habits, are effective in the school success of the child. Yeditepe University Hospital Child Health and Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Filiz Bakar says that it is possible to overcome this process much more easily with some smart planning. She makes the following suggestions about the order that needs to be maintained during school...
For children who go to bed much later in the summer and get used to getting up late, the most challenging part of the school period is waking up. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the sleeping order a few days before the opening of the schools. Because it is known that quality and adequate sleep is as effective in the growth and development of the child as it is in the success of the school. Although the sleep duration varies according to the age of the child, it is appropriate for primary school students to sleep around 21:30–22:00, and secondary school and high school students around 22:30. Although these periods may vary according to the morning departure time, it should be kept in mind that children who continue to grow and develop should sleep for 8-10 hours per day.
Breakfast is also the most important meal for children. For this reason, breakfast should not be skipped in order to get a few minutes of extra sleep. Moreover, it is extremely important to take time for this and to be with family members if possible. However, it is also necessary to pay attention to the foods consumed in or around the school during the day. Prof. Dr. Filiz Bakar lists her nutritional recommendations as follows…
From the first weeks of school, support your child in establishing a working schedule according to the time of arrival at home. Thus, they will be able to determine their own time. In addition, create a homework corner that you can decorate according to your own taste or color with organizers suitable for your interests. Have him take responsibility for his homework. Do not do their homework, just be a guide.
Encourage them to rest, to do an activity to clear their mind. Set an example for yourself. Discover what they like (such as cycling, swimming, volleyball, basketball) and create an opportunity for them to do it. Assist in hobby development (such as painting, playing musical instruments). Let them get a little bored in between, this will create an opportunity for their creativity to develop. While doing this, do not induce your child to get bored of everything by moving your child from that course to this course all weekend. Limit time spent with a computer, tablet, and mobile phone.
