Eating well is important during chemotherapy. It is essential to consume enough calories to maintain weight and a diet rich in protein to prevent the breakdown of body tissues and preserve strength. Patients who follow such a diet tend to be more resistant to infections that may occur during chemotherapy.
However, disruptions in nutrition may occur due to factors such as reduced appetite, loss of taste, mouth sores, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and infections caused by both the disease and chemotherapy. As mentioned before, in such cases, it is important to consult with a doctor to develop an appropriate nutritional strategy.
Firstly, apart from strictly adhering to hygienic conditions, there are very few foods that are absolutely prohibited. For example, due to the possibility of interfering with the effects of chemotherapy, one should avoid grapefruit and nettle or various herbs and waters with unknown contents.
Unnecessary nutritional products should not be used. It should be remembered that if a balanced and adequate diet is maintained, there is no need for additional nutritional supplements or vitamin-mineral supplements from outside. Additionally, scientific studies have proven that some antioxidant and vitamin-mineral medications can be harmful during chemotherapy. However, in cases where nutrition is compromised and there is a need for additional nutritional supplements, the patient should definitely consult with their oncologist. Any nutritional supplement or herbal treatment should never be used without the knowledge of the treating physician.
From time to time in the media, there are scientifically unfounded statements or writings by individuals who are not medical professionals or specialists in oncology, exploiting the emotions of vulnerable patients purely for commercial concerns. These health profiteers can go to the extent of discouraging patients from standard treatments. It is crucial not to trust these individuals and to seek the opinions of medical oncologists or dietitians on nutrition-related matters. It should be remembered that there is no miraculous plant or substance outside the knowledge of science. If an exceptionally effective plant or substance for cancer were to be discovered, it would be done by scientists, as it has always been the case.
