While the success of breast cancer treatment depends on the stage of the disease, early diagnosis can improve outcomes. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in surgical treatment—one of the key therapeutic approaches—thanks to developments in technology and surgical techniques. At Yeditepe University Hospitals, the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are carried out through a multidisciplinary approach involving the departments of breast surgery, medical oncology, plastic surgery, radiology, and pathology. Depending on the patient's condition, different surgical methods may be applied, ranging from removal of only the tumor in the breast to complete removal of the breast.

What Is Breast Surgery?

Breast surgery is a field dedicated to the surgical treatment of breast diseases. Depending on the patient's condition, various surgical techniques may be utilized during the treatment process, and the procedure may involve collaboration among different specialties as needed.

What Are the Treatment Methods for Breast Cancer?

Surgical methods used in breast cancer treatment include mastectomy and lumpectomy. The choice of surgical technique is determined based on the patient's individual condition.

Mastectomy

This method is used for both early  and late stage breast cancer patients. It can be performed in different forms depending on the patient's needs, such as total mastectomy (removal of the entire breast) or nipple sparing mastectomy. Additionally, prophylactic (preventive) mastectomy may be applied to individuals at high risk of breast cancer to reduce their risk by removing breast tissue.
In mastectomy, the breast tissue may be removed along with the nipple, but in some cases, the skin and nipple can be preserved. In such cases, a prosthesis is required to replace the removed breast tissue.

Lumpectomy

Also defined as breast conserving surgery, this procedure involves removing only a portion of the breast tissue, specifically the tumor and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue.
