Are you avoiding sugar for your health? But are you aware of foods that contain latent sugar? Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Dietitian Buket Ertaş Sefer drew attention to these foods and advised to ensure your conscious nutrition.
Scientific research reveals that excessive sugar consumption paves the way for diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce sugar intake, especially to avoid foods containing corn syrup.
Yeditepe University Kozyatağı Hospital Dietitian and Phytotherapy Specialist Buket Ertaş Sefer warned that "While doing this, make it a habit to read the labels of foods that do not seem to be sugary" and pointed out that sometimes additive sugars and derivatives can be found even in packaged foods taken as healthy.
Sefer stated, "Certain food samples may of course differ from company to company. Of course, some companies are sensitive to sugar additives. But as you will see by looking a little bit at grocery stores, most products contain sugar (usually corn syrup).
Sauces
Do you like to use sauce when you eat? Think again before you consume. Because prepared lemon and pomegranate sour sauces, which are especially placed in salads, are quite sugary. It is perhaps debatable which of the two you suffered the most in french fries and ketchup… In summary, if you like sauce, instead of lemon sauce, slices of lemon, instead of ketchup, the tomato sauce you make at home will be the healthiest.
Packaged Grano or Corn Flakes
Although there are sugar-free alternatives, many of them contain sugar. This purchase, which is made under the name of starting a diet or starting a healthy diet, is actually a very wrong choice. If you like this flavor, you can prepare your own granola most healthily by baking oats, dried fruits, and nuts.
Delicatessen Products such as Salami, Sausage
A group of protein sources when looked at. I just wish we could see the right mix of meat and spices. However, in most market products, every salami and sausage contain added sugar or starch. In other words, it can turn into a carbohydrate source at the same time and affect our sugar quickly. Moreover, we can observe them by reading labels. It is also important to be selective in delicatessen products.
Food Alternatives Appealing to Special Groups
We hear a lot now. Gluten, lactose sensitivity, Celiac…
Celiac disease did not appear recently, and for years these patients had to eat gluten-free. Fortunately, food alternatives for these patients have proliferated recently. Production has increased. However, as a marketing strategy, the perception that these products are actually diet products was created. The perception that everyone, including diabetics, can consume freely, which is completely beneficial to health, is quite common. Of course, if you have sensitivity, you will need to eliminate components such as gluten and lactose. However, if you are only diabetic, you do not need to choose these special foods. You should be aware that you are being harmed rather than benefited. Any gluten-free biscuit can contain glucose syrup, lactose-free milk, and added sugar. As we always say, it is very important to read labels for the right product choice.
Bouillons
The bouillons that were more commonly used in the past were also quite common in the recipes of our elders. But as times have changed, products like healthy bone broths have taken their place, with healthy eating becoming even more prominent. If you are still in the habit of bouillon, I recommend that you look at the label and read the contents carefully. Let us not ignore the bouillon after making bulgur rice instead of rice so that our sugar does not rise.
Fruity Drinks
Dairy products, mineral waters… I wish there were only natural sugar from fruit in it. Unfortunately, sugar is added to most fruit drinks to improve their taste and aroma. It is no use turning a gut-friendly beverage like kephir into a flora-enemy beverage. If you think you can only drink with fruit flavor, we should make our own smoothies at home. Mineral water is another example. If you choose fruity ones since it is more pleasant in the market, I recommend you to check the label.
Salty Crackers
While sweet foods were avoided, snacks and salty foods began to be considered innocent. But did you know that there can be added sugar in foods with a salty aroma? Salty crackers, biscuits... In fact, they contain sugar as well as many additives. In other words, it should be known that they have great effects on blood sugar.
Vegan Dark Chocolate
Is not that an innocent headline when you look at it? Just because a food does not contain animal resources and has a high cocoa content does not mean it will not contain sugar. The only difference between dark chocolate from other chocolates is that it has a high cocoa content. Sugar levels do not make a significant difference.
