You have reached the 24th week of pregnancy week by week. And now your baby has a chance to live, even if it will be born. So, what happens in the 24th week of pregnancy? What are the changes and developments in the mother and baby in the 24th week? How many grams does a 24-week baby weigh? What does a 24-week baby look like?
Yeditepe University Hospitals Gynecology and Obstetrics Department Head and IVF Specialist Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar answered these questions about the 24th week of pregnancy.
At 24 weeks of pregnancy, the baby now weighs 600 grams and measures 30 cm. Your baby is about the length of a cob of corn.
If born at 24 weeks, your baby is now considered to have a chance of survival. The lung development is sufficiently advanced to allow it to survive in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Your baby's sleep and wakefulness periods are becoming more regular. The kicks may feel strong at first, but as your baby grows bigger and stronger, the kicks you feel will be punch-like and more pronounced.
Your baby's brain is growing rapidly. Its facial muscles are also getting exercise as it uses different facial expressions such as smiling and frowning. As your baby grows, your body wants to make room for it.
Your pregnancy hormones cause the structures in your skin tissue to soften and stretch. This is why you may start to notice stretch marks on various parts of your body. After delivery, these stretch marks are expected to disappear over time. You can apply creams, oils, or lotions to make your skin feel soft, but these methods cannot completely prevent stretch marks from forming or make them disappear completely. Instead of being annoyed by these stretch marks, try to see them as reminders of the wonderful transformation your body is undergoing.
