Women's ovarian reserves decrease with increasing age. Yeditepe University Hospitals Gynecology and Obstetrics specialists stated that the age of 38 is an important limit for women. "After the age of 38 for women, egg reserve and quality deteriorate, and the likelihood of genetic disorders increases. Treatment success rates also decrease with increasing age. After the age of 43, the success rate of IVF treatment begins to decrease, and the success rate falls below 5%. In these women aged 38 and older, we prefer to select a treatment protocol that is tailored to each patient we call individualized treatment and obtain embryos and follow these embryos until the fifth day and transfer them after genetic screening in necessary cases."
Our specialists point out that IVF treatment has progressed very rapidly since the first years of its application. "Today, solutions can be produced with different methods for situations where egg reserves are reduced, the patient has limited time or pregnancy does not occur even though there is no problem in the female or male partner. In the advanced stages of a chocolate cyst or if sperm counts are low, IVF treatment can be done. In fact, if the man does not have any sperm, sperm can be taken directly from the ovarian tissue by surgical methods and the fertilization of the egg can be achieved by intracytoplasmic sperm injection."
Emphasizing the importance of healthy nutrition in IVF treatment, our physician says that they do not recommend foodstuffs with a long shelf life. Underlining the negative effect of smoking on treatment, Yeditepe University Hospital specialists continue as follows: "The fact that the woman smokes, especially during IVF treatment, negatively affects the number of oocytes, oocyte, and embryo quality, and reduces the likelihood of the embryo holding, and thus the success of pregnancy. Therefore, smoking should be stopped two to three months before the treatment. Smoking, on the other hand, also impairs sperm quality in men. Therefore, if a man has a sperm defect or deficiency, it is definitely beneficial to limit his smoking."
Our physician, who said that there are still many known mistakes about IVF treatment, and one of them is the perception that drugs cause weight gain, reminded us that women may tend to overeat due to stress during this period. They also underline that the medications used in the treatment have no proven harm.
