Yasemin and Özcan Demir, who live in Istanbul, embraced their first child 16 years ago. The couple, who wanted to have children for the second time, was surprised when the pregnancy did not occur. Years later, the family, who knocked on the door of the IVF center, experienced the excitement of being a parent again after the IVF treatment. Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar, who treated the couple who could not have children naturally due to their advanced age, said, "A woman who becomes pregnant by normal means may not be able to have children for many different reasons in the later period. "We should not waste time," he warned.
Yasemin and Özcan Demir welcomed their first child naturally in 2005. When the couple, who did not think about having a second child for 10 years, wanted to be parents again, these wishes did not come true. The couple, who have been seeing a doctor for more than 5 years and underwent many treatments, found the solution in IVF treatment. The family experienced the excitement of being a parent again within 3 months with the treatment applied at Yeditepe University Hospitals IVF Center. Yasemin Demir, 41, who is now 8 months pregnant and counts the days for birth, said, "I was very afraid that I would not have children again, but I did not give up." Özcan Demir, 43, said: "Our 16-year longing for children is over. I am so happy, I am happy. In this process, neither of us ever blamed the other." Having completed the surgery of the couple, Yeditepe University Hospitals Gynecology and Obstetrics and IVF Specialist Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar said, "The reason why we IVF our couple is a long break. One should not waste time thinking, 'I gave birth to the first child comfortably, I can easily conceive the second child'. Especially when you reach the age of 40, you should definitely get help."
I Did Not Want It at First, but Then I Learned I Could Not Anymore
Yasemin Demir, the mother who counted the days for their second baby to be named Ilgın Ecre, said, "I had my first daughter when I was 24 years old. And we wanted her to be an only child so that she could grow up more comfortably. As we got older, we decided to have a second child. But it did not happen when I wanted it to. We have received different treatments for 5 years."
It Was Disappointing Not To Have a Second Child
Stating that vaccination and drug treatments have been tried in many different centers and despite the doctors saying, 'no problem', Demir said that she could not be a mother, "It was a very troublesome period for all of us. I was beginning to think that I would never have children again, and I was completely disappointed. That is why it is a dream come true for me to be pregnant right now."
I Was in Despair, But I Did Not Give Up
Stating that the first IVF treatments resulted in miscarriage and that they were successful in the second trial, Demir said, "I am currently 8 months pregnant. The birth is imminent and the whole family is excitedly waiting for the new member of our family. Since I was having a miscarriage, I thought 'it will keep going like this'. This made me desperate, but I never gave up. So, parents who want babies should never give up. Of course, my biggest supporters in this process were my wife and daughter. But no matter what, you are alone when you put your head on the pillow. 'Should I give up? Will It Not Happen?' you may think. Whatever happens, we should not give up."
Stating that she took her first child in her arms at the age of 24 and that she was a child at that time, Demir said, "We will experience a second excitement. I have very good dreams. We were young then and now I feel like it will be different."
Counting the Days to Become a Father Again
Özcan Demir, 43, said that he was excited to be a father again 16 years later, "We always heard positive things in the places we went to be treated, but we could not get the full result. Our hope was now broken when we met our physician, Mr. Erkut. He said to us, 'Do not despair, everything is fine, and you will have a child again.' We returned home that day with joy. It was a tough time, but neither of us ever blamed the other. I tried to support my wife as much as I could. I said, "Let's not break our hope." We have come so far; I am really happy."
Naturally Pregnant Women May Not Have Children After a Long Break
Yeditepe University Hospitals Gynecology, Obstetrics, and IVF Specialist Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar, who performed the treatment of the Demir family, said that the desire to have children was postponed with the change in their life, and the shift of pregnancies to advanced ages may make it difficult to have children.
Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar said, "As in this case, the woman who lives her first pregnancy without any treatment may experience conception problems due to different reasons in the later period. The best example of this is pelvic infections. This can cause the tubes to become clogged. In addition, adhesions can be seen in those who have a cesarean section at their first birth. These may cause malfunctions in the tubes. You should not think that 'I gave birth to the first child comfortably; I can easily conceive for the second child'. Especially when she reaches the age of 40, it is absolutely necessary to get help."
Stating that the same is true for men, Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar said, "If the second baby is desired, the age should be questioned year after year. The sperm quality, which was normal 5 years ago, may be very different depending on the diseases experienced after 5 years, the drugs used, the treatments received, and environmental factors."
Above 40, There is Only a 6 Percent Chance of Pregnancy
Indicating that the chance of pregnancy has decreased to 6 percent especially in patients over 40 years of age, Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar said, "Since the ovarian functions of our patient decreased, we directly decided to IVF. In both hormone and ultrasound examinations, we saw that ovarian capacity decreased. Since our time was short, we started with a more radical method. Patients over the age of 40 should not waste time with other methods. It should not be forgotten that IVF treatment is an individual treatment. Each patient is evaluated according to their individual problems, ovarian capacity, sperm quality, and number in the male. And the person is given special treatment."
Elderly Age Creates Risk for Baby and Mother
Underlining that childbirth in advanced ages poses a risk for the baby and the mother, Yeditepe University Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology, IVF Specialist Prof. Dr. Attar concluded his words as the following:
"As we age, the risk of genetic diseases for the baby increases and the mother is more likely to miscarry. Birth complications can develop. For this reason, we recommend that women over 35 years of age should check the potential of their ovaries. In this way, genetic risk is a lower and higher success is achieved. If the patient is older, she should not wait because the chance of success decreases. If pregnancy is delayed, eggs must be frozen."
