Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is seen in one out of every 10 women, manifests itself with problems such as hair growth, menstrual irregularity, and acne. One of the consequences of the disease can be infertility. In addition, patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are at increased risk of uterine cancer and heart attack.
A multidisciplinary PCOS and Hirsutism Excellence Clinic for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a disease that should be treated together by Endocrinology, Obstetrics , and Dermatology specialists, was put into service at Yeditepe University Hospitals.
Head of Yeditepe University Hospitals PCOS and Hirsutism Clinic, Endocrinologist Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Keleştemur stated that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is the most common problem in women of reproductive age and made the following statements:
“Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a disease that needs to be treated by many different specialties. It's a public health issue. It manifests itself with long-term symptoms. Generally speaking, a few problems are more common. One of them is infertility. Most of the patients present with the problem of infertility. Another part comes with the problem of hair growth. In addition to this, patients can also apply the problems of hair loss, menstrual irregularities, and acne on the face. Diabetes is seen 7-10 times more frequently in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. In the long term, these patients may also have other problems. Metabolic syndrome can also be seen. The disease also has a skin-related side. The important point is that these are symptoms of PCOS disease. It is necessary to treat not only the symptoms but the disease itself.”
Underlining that the treatment of the disease requires a multidisciplinary approach, Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Keleştemur said, “About 70 percent of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome are obese. 30 percent are non-obese patients. With obesity, the symptoms of the disease become more severe. For example, hair growth and menstrual irregularities begin to occur more. In a patient with the weak polycystic ovarian syndrome, the findings are few, but when he/she gains weight, the findings become more severe. In other words, it has a close relationship with weight. Especially when hair growth in the facial area increases, patients are hesitant to go out in public. They try to hide their faces. This is a serious reason for social isolation. It has a psychiatric side. However, it should not be forgotten that PCOS is a treatable health problem.”
Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar, Gynecology and Obstetrics, IVF Specialist from Yeditepe University Hospitals PCOS and Hirsutism Clinic, stated that patients usually apply because of menstrual irregularity and said, “Abnormalities occur in the menstrual cycle. They may either have frequent periods or not at all. Since these patients have ovulation problems, there are also applications due to infertility. The primary cause of the disease is genetic. If the patient has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the probability of the presence of the disease in other family members and the next generation is high. Apart from this, it can be said that environmental reasons, nutrition, and the insufficient functioning of the bacteria are the causes of this situation. Endocrinological rhythm disorders directly originating from the brain may be a determinant.”
Expressing that the disease also affects heart health negatively, Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar continued his words as follows: “After these patients enter menopause, cardiovascular diseases or heart attacks are more common. In the later periods, uterine cancer is more commonly observed. Therefore, it should be known that PCOS is a serious disease. If not treated in the early period, serious problems occur in patients.”
