Microjection, also called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), implies injecting a single selected sperm into the egg. An enzyme is used to remove cells that surround the egg before the procedure. Microinjection uses micropipettes that are attached to special microscopes. ICIS has been used since 1992 and fertility rates have increased up to 80 to 90 percent.
This method is successfully used especially in male factor and severe infertilities. Microinjection is considered, if count of sperm in semen is low or sperms cannot fertilize the egg despite normal sperm count. In this method, sperms are collected with microscopic TESE from men with no sperm in semen and they are injected into eggs of the spouse and thus, these couples can give birth to a healthy child.
