Embryo is surrounded by a protective membrane, called the “Zona Pellucida”. Embryo continues division and growth, after it is placed into uterine cavity, and it tears the zona pellucid and implants into endometrium, after it reaches a certain stage. Assisted Hatching is a procedure that thins the exterior membrane, which surrounds the embryo, mechanically or using acidified Tyrode’s solution or thinning with laser or puncturing the membrane before embryo is transferred. This procedure is performed before embryo transfer to facilitate implantation of embryo.
Who Are Good Candidates of Assisted Hatching?
- Women older than 35,
- Abnormally thick zona pellucid,
- Failure of pregnancy despite good embryo transfer in previous attempts
- It is used to transfer frozen embryo.
In Vitro Fertilization Center of Yeditepe University Hospitals uses laser method, as it is a safe technique that can be performed within a short time.
