If development of embryo was slow or quality of embryo was poor in previous in vitro fertilization attempts, pregnancy fails in subsequent attempts. A culture medium (co-culture) that is made of endometrial cells rather than synthetic culture media is used to support better development of embryo in this group of patients. This method is not only available in our center, it is also used in some centers both in our country and worldwide; higher quality of embryo development is ensured relative to previous attempts and pregnancy rates are enhanced. However, it cannot be performed in many centers, as this method requires extra labor and technical support in the laboratory along with experienced experts.
Endometrial tissues are collected with cell sampler in last stage of the luteal phase on Days 20 to 23 of the period. After these cells are sorted with mechanical and enzymatic procedures, they are grown. Fertilized embryos are placed on these cells and their growth is followed up there until blastocyst phase. This method allows growth of embryos on uterine tissue – similar to a natural process of body – and growth factors available in this medium support development of embryo. Moreover, antioxidants sweep away toxins that may potentially harm the embryo.
