Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yeditepe University Hospitals and IVF Specialist Prof. Dr. Erkut Attar explained what happens in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks of pregnancy as follows:
First Weeks of Pregnancy
The gestational week is calculated according to the date of the last menstrual period. The date of your last menstrual period is the first day of your last period. The pregnancy calendar can be summarized approximately as follows from the first day:
- Day 1 First day of your period
- Day 14 Ovulation
- Within 24 hours after ovulation, the egg, which is on its journey through the tubes into the uterus, is fertilized with sperm.
- As the fertilized egg continues its journey into the uterus, it begins to divide and multiply, forming the embryo.
- Day 19 - 20 (5-6 days after ovulation): implantation, the attachment of the embryo to the uterus, takes place.
During this period it is not possible to know that you are or will be pregnant. If you are trying to conceive, you can consider the following suggestions:
If you have decided to get pregnant...
- Consulting an obstetrician as soon as you are planning a pregnancy
- Taking folic acid supplements (reduces the risk of anomalies in the baby)
- Taking vitamin D supplements if you have vitamin D deficiency
- Avoiding certain foods such as undercooked/raw meat, raw eggs, offal
- No smoking and alcohol use
