With the coronavirus epidemic, the importance of the concept of an "antimicrobial hospital" came to the forefront. Hospitals need to be hygienic and free of microbes from the ventilation system to the surfaces in order to protect the lives of patients.
Yeditepe University Founder and Honorary President Bedrettin Dalan said, “The ventilation system is important in the spread of germs and viruses. If the same air circulates constantly in a hospital, it means that the air inside is cooled and brought back to the same environment. This can cause germs to be carried from one room to another and spread throughout the hospital. One of the important points we paid attention to while constructing the hospital was to establish a system in which the fresh air taken from the outside is constantly cleaned in the hospital. The same air should not be constantly circulating in a hospital.”
Bedrettin Dalan, who stated that he was very affected and troubled when his close friend Veysel Atasoy, former Minister of State and Energy, died in Ankara due to a hospital microbe years ago, made the following statements: “Shortly after his death, we set out to build the most sheltered hospital against hospital germs in the world. Thanks to the technology of our university, we have developed a molecule that provides antimicrobial properties. The basis of this molecule is boron. It is a completely domestic and national molecule. We talked to manufacturers and conducted nearly 40 experiments. We had all the surfaces in our hospital produced using this material. In addition to the surfaces, the doorknobs, the light switches, the toilet lids, the walls, etc. have all been made germicidal. Thanks to this molecule, we neutralize microbes, including viruses, inside the hospital. Yeditepe University Hospital entered the literature with this feature. It is the first and only one in the world. There is no second one.”
Yeditepe University Founder and Honorary President Bedrettin Dalan also gave the following information about the importance of the ventilation system in hospitals: “The important thing here is to get fresh air from outside and to purify it from germs by filtering it. We clean the fresh air we take from outside at the operating room standard thanks to the special molecule that we apply on the filters we use in air conditioning units, and use it in patient rooms and throughout the hospital. With the filtration we make using our special molecule, we purify the air from microbes and reach clean air at the operating room standard. In this way, the air that the patient breathes in the normal room is the same as the air he/she breathes in the operating room.”
Bedrettin Dalan said, “The biggest danger in an open wound is the hospital germ. The only way to eliminate it is to build a hygienic hospital. Everything from the bedstead where the patient sleeps to all the items he/she uses should be disinfected. At this point, the bedstead and mattresses must be washable. Although these are factors that increase the cost, they are not more valuable than human life. That's why we didn't compromise.”
