Will the Hernia Heal on Its Own?

Although the hernia, which affects millions of people, is encountered very often, unfortunately, its importance is still not fully understood. Regardless of the reason for its occurrence, the  General Surgeon, who pointed out that the hernia did not heal spontaneously, also added that the hernias should be treated by a specialist physician without wasting time.
Hernia, which can occur in anyone regardless of gender or age, is described as a potential opening in muscle plans. The hernia is either congenital and becomes evident day by day, or it develops due to the weakening of the abdominal wall. Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital General Surgery Specialist: “There are a few potentially weak areas in the abdominal wall. Sometimes a hernia may occur when there is a sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure in these weak areas. Some of the factors that are involved in hernia formation are the weakening of muscle and fascia groups naturally due to aging, old incision sites, traumas, or disorders that have existed since birth. Hernia may also occur after pushing, urination, chronic cough, constipation, and heavy lifting. The diagnosis of a hernia can be noticed by routine physician examination. Puffiness occurs under the skin. It is not easy to understand whether hernias seen in the elderly are hereditary or acquired.”

Pay Attention to the Redness of the Skin!

Reminding that standing and sitting for a long time can trigger pain, our expert also remarked: “The constant pain on the hernia sac and redness on the skin are indicators that the hernia is compressed and suffocated by the intestine inside. Intestinal gangrene, which is caused by the compression of the intestines in the hernia sac and the deterioration of their nutrition, may require emergency surgery because it is life-threatening."

It Should be Treated Without Wasting Time

Pointing out that there is a false belief that the hernia will heal on its own over time, our expert continued: “Waiting for the resulting hernia to pass or using support apparatus such as an inguinal ligament or belt will not help the treatment. However, exercise and physical therapy also have no effect. Not all hernias can be treated without surgery. It is extremely important to treat these hernias without waiting.”

Chance To Return to Daily Life Fastly

Stating that hernias can be repaired with open or laparoscopic methods, which have been frequently used in recent years, Yeditepe University Hospital General Surgery Specialist gave the following information: "In laparoscopic hernia surgeries, instead of making a large skin incision in the abdomen or groin as in traditional hernia surgeries, the hernia is repaired with the help of cameras and tools sent in through very small holes. In both open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs, patches of thin material are used to reduce recurrence, causing any harm to the patient. In laparoscopic surgeries, pain is low, and analgesic need is low. Patients get up earlier and are able to do their daily work. Laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery can be easily performed in the same session as other surgery in patients who will undergo laparoscopic surgery due to prostate, kidney, and gallbladder problems.
