DEFINITION: Following oral administration of iotonic acid tablets, radiographs are taken to visualize the gallbladder.
APPOINTMENT: Required.
DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: On the evening before the examination, a light meal consisting of fruit, fruit juice, and fat-free boiled vegetables should be eaten. Sugary coffee and tea may be consumed, but cream and milk should not be used. Fried foods and meat should not be eaten.
After the evening meal, nothing should be taken orally, no gum should be chewed, and no smoking should be allowed; only water may be consumed.
CONDITIONS THAT PREVENT THE EXAMINATION: In patients who have undergone cholecystectomy (gallbladder removed) and in patients with elevated blood bilirubin levels, visualization of the gallbladder will not be possible.
Barium studies performed within 72 hours prior to this examination will interfere with the procedure. If IVP and CT examinations are also requested for the same patient, these should be performed before the cholecystogram.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy constitutes an absolute contraindication.
CONTRAST: Iotonic acid (Oral administration)
AVERAGE PROCEDURE DURATION: 45 minutes – 1 hour
TRANSPORT: No special requirements.
POST-PROCEDURE INFORMATION: The patient may resume normal daily activities. The examination is evaluated and reported by the Radiologist. The films and the examination report are delivered to the patient together.
