“It is very important to determine the right time by focusing on their development in order to give children a healthy toilet habits,” said the Child Health and Diseases Specialist.
Toilet or potty training, which is one of the most significant steps on the way to individualization, is a process that the child can manage on his own for the first time in the transition from infancy to early childhood. ''Successfully completing this process by waiting for the right time is extremely important for the social, emotional, personal and psychological development of the child'', stated Yeditepe University Bağdat Street Polyclinic Child Health and Diseases Specialist and answered the questions asked by parents about this issue.
How Do I Know If My Child Is Ready For Toilet Training?
First of all, the child needs to reach physiological maturity, that is, a maturity that can control the bladder and anal muscles. But how can we observe this? ... The child must keep his/her urine and poop for a certain period and must feel uncomfortable when s/he makes diapers. Dry diaper for about 2 hours during the day or waking up in the morning with a dry diaper may be a sign of this. At the same time, although the body is ready for this, it is very important that it can express itself in the developmental process, and there should be awareness talks about pee and poop. When the child gives these signals, if s/he is in a peaceful period where there is no stress in his/her routine life and does not have to deal with other difficulties, toilet training can be started.
What Is The Best Time For Toilet Training?
In fact, it is not correct to say a certain age range to start toilet training. Although we say that physiological toilet training can be given after 18 months, it is very important to start at the appropriate age according to the developmental characteristics of the child. This may be 2 years old in some children and 3 years or even later in others. The important thing is to set the right time for the child and the parent. Otherwise, if this process is not managed correctly, different problems may be encountered in the future, in which chronic constipation, urinary incontinence, poop retention, and sexual development steps may also be affected. In summary, when the child gives the right signals, toilet training can be started. There is no time or season for this. In addition to the child being ready, the parent should also be in a period that can manage this process comfortably.
Tuvalet Eğitimi İçin Aileler Hangi Adımları İzlemeli?
Before starting this process, going to the toilet with the child is very valuable in terms of preliminary information to show him what happened, and how to pee and poop. Afterward, you can get support from books and toys. If it is believed that the child is ready, it should be offered to remove the child from the diaper and the child should be supported, but there should be no pressure and judgmental discourses should be avoided. This process should be continued according to the attitude of the child without a hurry.
