Spinal tumors generally form in 3 different regions.
Metastases usually occur in the spinal column. There are also primary tumors originating from the bone. Tumors inside the spinal cord and its membrane are usually tumors originating from nerve tissue.
The most common complaint is localized pain in the spine. The pain usually increases at night. Complaints other than pain vary according to the location of the tumor. For example, a tumor located in the neck region can cause loss of strength in the arms and legs as well as pain. In the advanced period, loss of strength may progress, paralysis may occur in the arms and legs, and urinary incontinence and loss of sensation may occur. If the location of the tumor is lower, that is, in the back or waist region, only the legs can be affected. Bladder and bowel functions are also among the affected areas.
The most common tumors in the spine bones are metastases, that is, tumors that occur in another part of the body and spread to the spine. Metastases of diseases such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and multiple myeloma are the most common in this group.
First of all, it is necessary to understand what kind of tumor is encountered by taking a biopsy in spinal tumors. In some cases, if the source of metastasis is clear, treatment can be started. Tumors with metastasis require a team effort and are carried out together with the oncological treatment of the patients.
