Insomnia is one of the issues that everyone suffers from occasionally. We go to bed early, but we cannot fall asleep. What are the causes of insomnia? What happens if we do not sleep regularly? Yeditepe University Hospitals, Internal Medicine and Endocrinology specialists explained the causes of insomnia.
40% of individuals over the age of forty experience insomnia. Insomnia negatively affects the quality of life and health and increases the risk of accidents. Poor sleep during the day causes drowsiness, poor job performance, and mood disorders.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) points out that insomnia is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. Therefore, researchers are trying to solve this problem.
Our expert stated that many causes that may cause insomnia have been identified and the types of insomnia have been identified. Current data indicate that insomnia is associated with nutrition. A group of researchers from the University of Colombia concluded that a carbohydrate-rich diet is associated with insomnia.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at 5,3069 women who participated in the Women's Health Initiative study. A relationship was found between refined carbohydrate consumption and insomnia. Although similar findings were observed in previous studies, it gave an idea about the immediate situation since there was no long-term follow-up of the patients. It was also unclear whether refined sugar consumption is causing insomnia or whether these people are consuming sugar because they are sleep deprived.
Refined Sugar Consumption Linked to Insomnia
One of the ways to understand this is to compare people with different diets. In this study, when compared with people who do not consume high refined sugar consumption, it was found that refined sugar consumption is associated with insomnia. Refined sugar refers to foods with a high glycemic index, such as sugar, white flour, sugary drinks, and rice.
It is suggested that increased insulin release in response to refined carbohydrate intake as a possible mechanism causes insomnia by reducing blood sugar and increasing adrenaline and cortisol release. The fact that blood sugar rises rapidly after such a meal and then falls rapidly is seen as responsible for this work. On the other hand, it has been determined that sugar from fruits and vegetables does not have as much effect as refined sugar. In this case, avoiding processed sugar seems to be necessary for good sleep.
Chronic Insomnia Causes Excess Calorie Intake
Stating that chronic insomnia causes more calorie intake in the long term, Yeditepe University Hospital, Internal Medicine and Endocrinology specialist remarked that it also causes an increased risk of diseases such asobesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Some studies have even reported that insomnia increases the risk of a heart attack.
Psychotherapy Methods are Used in the Treatment of Insomnia
Behavioral psychotherapy methods are used in the treatment of insomnia. Maybe a good diet will solve it. Overcoming insomnia with a regular diet away from processed carbohydrates will prevent many diseases that may occur in the future.
