DEFINITION: It is the examination of the small intestine by cannulating the small intestine through the nasopharynx (from the nose to the small intestine) and using X-ray under fluoroscopic control with the administration of contrast material by a radiologist.
ADVISORY It is scheduled together with the patient's doctor.
DIET RESTRICTION: From 24 hours prior to the procedure, fiber-releasing foods, fried foods and meat should not be eaten. You can drink grain-free soup, fruit juice without pulp (fruit pulp), sugar-free soda, coffee or tea without sugar or milk. In particular, milk and creamy drinks and gas-forming drinks should be avoided. Plenty of water is recommended (e.g. one glass every hour).
PATIENT PREPARATION A laxative should be taken orally about 14 hours before the procedure to ensure bowel cleansing. Since the laxative to be used and the method of use will be determined by the Radiologist according to the age and weight of the patient, the patient should consult the Radiology Department before the examination. Starting from the morning of the procedure, nothing should be eaten or drunk until the examination is performed. The patient should come to the examination with full fasting. The use of laxatives (purgatives) may not be appropriate in the following cases.
1 - Fluid restrictions,
2 - In renal failure,
3 - In congestive heart failure,
4 - Under 15 years of age,
5 - Gastrointestinal obstruction and suspected obstruction,
In the above cases, please inform the Radiologist.
CONDITIONS PREVENTING THE EXAMINATION: Barium examinations performed more than 72 hours before this examination preclude the procedure. In addition, if requested for the same patient; IVP, Cholangiography and CT examinations should be performed before this procedure.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Administration of barium sulphate to the gastrointestinal tract is contraindicated in patients with suspected intestinal perforation. Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy is an absolute contraindication.
CONTRAST: Barium sulfate.
AVERAGE PROCESSING TIME: 60 min.
TRANSPORT:No feature.
POST-PROCEDURE INFORMATION: The patient can resume normal daily activities. The examination is evaluated and reported by the Radiology specialist. Films and examination report are delivered to the patient together. Patients who have had barium sulfate applied to the gastrointestinal system are recommended to drink plenty of fluids after the examination
