Kidney failure, which is the last stage of chronic kidney disease, is an important problem especially in our country where kidney diseases are common. Reminding that there are many factors from diabetes to rheumatological diseases in the emergence of the disease, Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist said that with the diagnosis at an early stage, it can be treated to a significant extent.
Pointing out that kidney failure disease, which is difficult to find, is becoming increasingly common, Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist Prof. Dr. Süheyla Apaydın stated nephritis, kidney, and urinary tract stones, which directly affect the kidney, can also lead to kidney failure. However, Yeditepe University Hospitals Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialists, who warn that the disease may tend to progress due to its nature due to the late diagnosis, also added, "In addition to structural disorders of the kidney, diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, rheumatological diseases, infections, and congenital and genetic syndromes can affect many organs and systems as well as the kidney, causing kidney failure. Considering that these problems are quite common in our country and their prevalence is increasing, we can say that the importance of chronic kidney failure is increasing."
Reminding that if the underlying disease is known and the patient is followed closely, it will be easier to recognize the disease, continued her words as follows: “In those with insidious course, symptoms such as increased blood pressure, chronic fatigue, weakness, night urination, bad breath, increased need to drink water, and edema starting in the legs can be seen depending on the nature and amount of kidney damage. Unfortunately, especially in young people, symptoms can only occur after they reach an advanced stage”.
Informing that the two most common causes of chronic kidney failure in our country are diabetes and hypertension, said, “The treatment of the main disease should not be neglected in systemic diseases involving the kidney such as diabetes and hypertension. The better it is under control, the less likely the kidney will get sick, because whatever the underlying cause is, controlling blood pressure, reducing salt no matter where it comes from, reducing animal protein in meals, losing weight, quitting smoking, uncontrolled pain relief, it is necessary not to use anti-inflammatory drugs, and not to have tomography, angiography, radiography given with contrast material (dye) without consulting a nephrology or internal medicine specialist, except in emergency situations. It is necessary to come to regular follow-ups at certain intervals, and other drug treatments such as blood sugar control, alkali treatment, reduction of uric acid can be used.”
Sharing that many factors are effective in chronic kidney failure and that all these factors should be controlled together, continued her words as follows. “For example, you can't control blood pressure despite medication without reducing salt. Protein loss in the urine does not decrease without the use of appropriate blood pressure medication. If you cannot lose weight, blood pressure and sugar control will be difficult. Even if you give alkaline treatment, you cannot slow down the deterioration of the kidney without reducing animal protein. Unfortunately, there is no approach that guarantees that everything will get better with a single treatment, and a definite result will be obtained.”
“As a method of exploitation of the hopes of the patients, herbal treatments from China such as gilaburu, blueberry, rosemary, St. John's wort, bitter melon and Chinese herbal treatments, which are highly recommended on the internet, can increase the progression of the disease" said Yeditepe University Hospitals Internal Medicine and Nephrology Specialist and continued, "Gilaburu and blueberry may have a reducing effect on the frequency of urinary tract infections such as frequent cystitis due to a substance they contain, but it has not been proven by scientific studies."
